Sleep:Balance is the Mantra!!

London: Getting too much or too little sleep could be harmful for health, suggests a new study conducted in Britain.

Jane Ferrie of the University College London Medical School here examined 10,308 participants between 35-55 years of age and found that a decrease in sleep duration among participants sleeping only for six, seven or eight hours was associated with a 110 percent excess risk of cardiovascular mortality.

However, an increase in sleep duration among those sleeping for seven or eight hours was associated with a 110 percent excess risk of non-cardiovascular mortality.

On an average, most adults need seven to eight hours of sleep each night to feel alert and well rested.

"In terms of prevention, our findings also indicate that consistently sleeping seven or eight hours per night is optimal for health," Ferrie was quoted as saying by the science portal EurekAlert.

The research is the first to show that both a decrease and an increase in sleep duration are associated with an elevated risk of mortality by cardiovascular and non-cardiovascular means, respectively.

Types of toothpaste to be used!

Why is brushing with toothpaste important? First and foremost, a toothpaste and a correct brushing action work to remove plaque, a sticky, harmful film of bacteria that grows on your teeth that causes caries, gum disease, and eventual tooth loss if not controlled.

Second, the toothpaste contains fluoride, which makes the entire tooth structure more resistant to decay and promotes remineralization, which aids in repairing early decay before the damage can even be seen.

Third, special ingredients in the dentifrice help to clean and polish the teeth and remove stains over time.

Fourth, toothpastes help freshen breath and leave your mouth with a clean feeling.

What type of toothpaste should I use?
As long as your toothpaste contains fluoride, the brand you buy really does not matter, whether or not it is in paste, gel, or even powder form, or containing a certain uflavor. All fluoride dentifrices work effectively to fight plaque and cavities and clean and polish tooth enamel.

If your teeth are hypersensitive to hot or cold, consider trying a dentifrice designed for sensitive teeth

Dentifrices containing baking soda and/or hydrogen peroxide (which are both good cleansing agents) give the teeth and mouth a clean, fresh, pleasant feeling that can offer an incentive to brush more, but fluoride is the true active ingredient at work protecting your teeth.

Some prefer a tartar control toothpaste containing pyrophosphates to prevent the buildup of soft calculus deposits on their teeth. New pastes offer advanced whitening formulas aimed at safely removing stains to make teeth brighter and shinier, although they can't nearly match the effectiveness of a professional bleaching formula administered or prescribed by a dentist.

How much should I use?
Contrary to what toothpaste commercials show, the amount of paste or gel needed on your brush for effective cleaning does not have to be a heaping amount. Simply squeeze on a pea-sized dab of paste on the top half of your brush. If you brush correctly holding the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle and brush inside, outside and between your teeth, the paste should foam enough to cover all of your teeth. Children under 6, however, should only be given a very small, baby pea-sized dab of dentifrice on their brush.

DIFFERENT KINDS OF TOOTHPASTES Advertising can be very seductive! This statement is especially true with respect to dentifrices (toothpastes) .The recent proliferation of specialty toothpastes has clogged store shelves and confused many patients. Advertisements seem to suggest that we need a tartar control toothpaste for removing tartar, a whitening toothpaste to brighten teeth, and even a gum care toothpaste to prevent gum disease. What is the most effective toothpaste?

Toothpastes vs. Gels
Only their physical appearance and a taste is the difference between pastes and gels. While gels may seem less abrasive than pastes, this is not the case. Actually, gels can be more abrasive because of the silica used to make them. However, both are safe, effective cleaners; use whichever you like!

Tartar Control Toothpastes
Most studies suggest that tartar control toothpastes do not remove tartar. They help prevent tartar (hardened plaque that may cause gum disease) from forming. The active ingredient in tartar-control toothpastes is usually pyrophosphate. Some clinical trials on these toothpastes have shown that they reduce tartar as much as 36 percent. They do not reduce the tartar that forms below the gum line, which is the area where tartar can cause gum disease. This is why it is important for your dentist to perform regular professional cleanings.

Gum Care Toothpastes
Gum Care toothpastes also have questionable efficacy. This type of paste contains stannous fluoride as opposed to sodium fluoride found in other types of paste. While some studies show stannous fluoride may be helpful in reducing the incidence of gingivitis (a reversible form of gum disease), it has also been suggested stannous fluoride is not as affective in protecting against cavities as sodium fluoride. Any toothpaste containing fluoride is fine, however.

Baking Soda Toothpastes
Although these have'nt become very popular in India, they are available. There are no conclusive studies that prove baking soda toothpastes significantly reduce cavities compared to other toothpastes. Some people enjoy the taste and feel of baking soda or mint toothpastes. The attractive taste of baking soda and mint toothpastes may encourage people to brush longer. Many baking soda toothpastes may also contain peroxides which can irritate and damage gum tissue.

Abrasive Smoker's Toothpastes and Toothpowders
These toothpastes are not recommended as they can cause recession of the gums and abrasion (slow removal) of tooth structure. The best way to rid your teeth of smoking stains is to stop smoking and, then, have a professional cleaning by a dentist.

Desensitizing Toothpastes
These pastes do actually work for a majority of the people using them. Generally, they are needed when a patient has had gum recession, thereby exposing the root of the tooth. Once this exposure occurs, a tooth can be sensitive to cold, hot, touch, sweet, or sour. Senquel,Thermoseal, Thermodent K are some of the brands on the market.New ones come on the market regularly. Some brands have different ingredients; therefore, if one brand does not work, try a different brand. Note: you should have any sensitivity checked by your dentist first to be sure it is not a more serious problem.

Whitening Toothpastes
One must be careful when using these due to their abrasiveness. These should not be used exclusively but should be incorporated into a routine using a fluoride paste. Do not use a whitening paste every time you brush; use only once every day or two. Certain brands can be more abrasive than others. Their efficacy is questionable. Some people claim to notice a brightening of tooth color, while others notice no change. This difference is partly due to variety in diet and tooth structure among people. If you are serious about whitening your teeth, you should discuss various options, including bleaching, with your dentist.

Denture Pastes
While it's true that more people are keeping their teeth, those who use full or partial dentures need to keep them clean. What to use? Not surprisingly, there are denture cleansers that safely and effectively clean dentures. These products contain a mild abrasive and detergent plus a flavoring agent. If you run out of denture paste, use soft hand soap or mild dishwashing liquid to clean dentures. There are other, more exotic ingredients such as aloe vera and sanguinaria that can be found in commercially available toothpastes. However, let your dentist be your guide in deciding whether to purchase products with these ingredients.

In Conclusion:
Brush with a FLUORIDE toothpaste for 2 minutes at least twice a day using a soft bristled toothbrush. Most people only brush their teeth for about 15-20 seconds on average! The mechanical action employed using the proper brushing technique is more important than the brand of toothpaste you purchase. Flossing at least once a day is also very important because it removes food from between teeth where even the best toothbrush and toothpaste are ineffective.

LOW BLOOD PRESSURE

Low blood pressure or hypotension refers to the fall in blood pressure below normal. It is a condition in which the action of the heart, in forcing the blood through the arteries, is weak. This is a direct outcome of a weakened and devitalised system.

Low blood pressure symptoms -- Lethargy, weakness, dizziness
The patient with chronic low blood pressure may complain of lethargy, weakness, fatigue, and dizziness. The patient may faint, especially if arterial pressure is lowered further when he assumes an erect position. These symptoms are presumably due to a decrease in perfusion of blood to the brain, heart, skeletal muscle, and other organs.

Low blood pressure causes -- Faulty nutrition, Malnutrition
The most important cause of low blood pressure is faulty nutrition. It makes the tissues forming the walls of the blood vessels over-relaxed, and flabby or streched. This results in less supply of oxygen and nutrients to the tissues. Malnutrition can result from a diet deficient in calories, proteins, vitamin C, or almost any one of the B vitamins.
Loss of blood, slow internal bleeding
Sometimes the blood pressure falls rapidly because of loss of blood. Low blood pressure may also develop gradually because of slow bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract, kidneys, or bladder.
Emotional instability
Emotional problems are a far more frequent cause of low blood pressure. To a lesser degree, prolonged disappointment and frustration may result in a subnormal blood pressure.

Low blood pressure home remedies -- Low Blood Pressure treatment using Beetroot
The juice of raw beetroot is one of the most effective home remedies for low blood pressure. The patient should drink a cup of this juice twice daily for treating this condition Considerable improvement will be noticeable within a week.

Low Blood Pressure treatment using Indian Spikenard
The herb Indian spikenard is another effective home remedy for low blood pressure. It should be taken in doses of thirty to forty grains with a pinch of a little camphor and cinnamon (dalchini). An infusion can also be prepared by steeping 15 to 20 gm of the herb in 250 ml of boiling water, and taking it thrice a day.
Low Blood Pressure treatment using Epsom Salts Bath
Hot Epsom salt bath are one of the simplest remedy for low blood pressure. An Epsom salt bath is prepared by dissolving one to one and half kg of commercial Epsom Salt in an ordinary bath of hot water. The patient should remain immersed in the bath for ten to twenty minutes. This bath should be taken just before retiring to bed, and care should be exercised not to catch a chill afterwards.
Low Blood Pressure treatment using Nutrients
Protein, vitamin C, and all vitamins of the B group have been found beneficial in the prevention and treatment of low blood pressure. Of these, pantothenic acid is of particular importance. Liberal use of this vitamin alone often helps in raising the blood pressure. A diet which contains adequate quantities of complete proteins, B vitamin and, particularly, the nutrients that stimulate adrenal production, quickly normalizes low blood pressure.
Low Blood Pressure treatment using Salt
The use of salt is valuable in low blood pressure. Until the blood pressure reaches normal levels through proper dietary and other remedies, it is essential that the patient should take salty foods and half a teaspoon of salt in water daily.
Low blood pressure diet -- Exclusive fruit diet
The treatment for low blood pressure should aim at rejuvenation of the whole system. To begin with, the patient should adopt an exclusive fresh fruit diet for about five days, taking three meals a day of fresh fruity fruits at five-hourly intervals.
Milk and fruit diet
Thereafter he may adopt a fruit and milk diet for two or three weeks. After the fruit and milk diet the patient may gradually embark upon a well balanced diets consisting of seeds nuts and grains with emphasis on fresh fruit and raw vegetables. Further period of all fruit diet followed by a milk and fruit diet may be necessary every two or three months in some cases, depending on the progress being made.

Other Low blood pressure treatment -- Warm-Water enema treatment
A warm-water enema should be used daily to cleanse the bowels during the first few days of the treatment, and afterwards, if necessary. Those who are habitually constipated should take all the possible steps for its eradication. Daily dry friction and sponging should be undertaken by those suffering from low blood pressure.

Light walking, cycling, swimming and Breathing exercises
They should undertake breathing and other light exercises like walking , swimming and cycling. The patient should take sun and air baths and spend as much time as possible in the fresh air.
Avoid excessive work, anxiety
All living habits which tend to enervate the system, such as overwork, excesses of all kinds, needless worry, and negative thinking must be eliminated as far as possible.

Smoking and Baldness!!

If you have been taking lung cancer as the only risk surrounding smokers then it won’t be wrong to say that you are a bit less informed about the risks that you puff in, every time you smoke.

Actually, a new study aimed at knowing risk factors, associated with cigarette smoking has revealed that smoking habit might add to your scalp’s visibility by speeding up the thinning process.

Findings of this study are based on an analysis of around 740 middle aged and older Asian men who were suffering a common kind of hair problem, generally known as androgenetic alopecia. During the course of study, experts admitted that no doubt, age is a major factor behind thinning of hair, still smoking contributes considerably. And this effect was more palpable in men smoking 20 or more cigarettes, daily.

The way smoking contributes to it, is still not very clear. However, experts opine that may be smoking increases the risk for hair loss by either destroying hair follicles or disturbing normal bodily functions, important for healthy hair.

This is not the first time when smoking has been linked to hair problems and it is quite understandable that when smoking can affect overall health drastically, so nothing strange if it affects hair-health too. Actually, when we smoke different kinds of gases and chemicals get into our mechanism, restricting the levels of oxygen and nutrients in our blood, which deeply affects entire mechanism, no matter it’s in the form of bad lung functioning or in the form of unhealthy skin or hair!

So choice is yours, whether you want big cloudy puffs or healthy and bouncy hair!

Hyperemesis gravidarum is a severe type of vomiting of pregnancy, which has got harmful effect on the health of the mother and the growing fetus. I t can result in dehydration, acidosis, malnutrition and weight loss. This condition can be dangerous to the fetus if persists. The reason for Hiperemesis gravidarum has not been identified yet, but an association between high levels of the hormones estrogen and chronic gonadotropin ( HCG ) has been found. HCG is a hormone produced by the placenta that increases until the end of the first trimester.

Other possible problems related with abnormal o severe vomiting includes bile duct disease, drug toxicity, pancreatitis, low blood sugar, and problems with the thyroid and inflammatory bowel disorders.

ABC of Diabetes!

What is DIABETES?
Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin, or alternatively, when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. Insulin is a hormone that regulates blood sugar. Hyperglycaemia, or raised blood sugar, is a common effect of uncontrolled diabetes and over time leads to serious damage to many of the body's systems, especially the nerves and blood vessels.

Type 1 diabetes (previously known as insulin-dependent or childhood-onset) is characterized by a lack of insulin production.

Type 1 diabetes is rapidly fatal.
Symptoms include excessive excretion of urine (polyuria), thirst (polydipsia) , constant hunger, weight loss, vision changes and fatigue. These symptoms may occur suddenly.

Type 2 diabetes (formerly called non-insulin- dependent or adult-onset) results from the bodys ineffective use of insulin.

Type 2 diabetes comprises 90% of people with diabetes around the world, and is largely the result of excess body weight and physical inactivity.
Symptoms may be similar to those of Type 1 diabetes, but are often less marked. As a result, the disease may be diagnosed several years after onset, once complications have already arisen.

What are common consequences of DIABETES?
Over time, diabetes can damage the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys, and nerves.

Diabetes Facts
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that more than 180 million people worldwide have diabetes. This number is likely to more than double by 2030.
In 2005, an estimated 1.1 million people died from diabetes

Almost 80% of diabetes deaths occur in low and middle-income countries.
Almost half of diabetes deaths occur in people under the age of 70 years; 55% of diabetes deaths are in women.

WHO projects that diabetes deaths will increase by more than 50% in the next 10 years without urgent action. Most notably, diabetes deaths are projected to increase by over 80% in upper-middle income countries between 2006 and 2015.

Do & Dont For DIABETIC PATIENTS
Fortunately or unfortunately for the diabetes patients, there are many dont's and only a few do's. But these few do's are so powerful, if done properly, they are the cure-all for the diabetes.

Firstly, confidence and the will power to develop a fighting spirit in life, are the cornerstone for meeting the diabetes challenge. Mind is more subtle than the body. Body is made up of gross material. The same is not the case with the mind. The subtle is always more powerful than the gross.

Let me tell you about the do's first. You need to have a definite schedule for walking and for doing the right type of exercises. There are many types of physical exercises and yoga asanas, but you , in consultation with the physiotherapist, should decide, which are the right ones for you.

Similarly, the early morning walks go a long way in controlling the blood sugar levels. Avoid intensity of workouts, but swimming, walking and moderate biking and working on treadmill will do good for glucose tolerance, glucose control and in the area of overall metabolism.

Let your diet be in agreement according to the laws of nature. You will know more about it in the later part of this article.

The word diet frightens some persons, thrills many. The main purpose of the diet is to understand your food. Why you eat, what you eat! Formerly, you ate as per the demand of your stomach. Now your mind is also involved in the eating exercise.

Mind will instruct you to eat right things at the right time and avoid certain types of food altogether! When I say, diet, I have no intention of making you to starve. Eat plenty, but eat the reasonable ones and shun the unreasonable. Need has to score over taste.

I don't wish you to confuse with counting the calories. Stop eating, when you feel that you want a little more. There needs to be enough 'elbow room' in the stomach for the process of digestion.

Now, you know the causes and the reasons that led you to the pedestal of diabetes.

Avoid all types of sweets, refined sugar, oily food, foods that have too much carbohydrates and junk food. Treat junk food and processed food full of additives, as your enemy. Avoid cheese, cream and other dairy products. You are encouraged to take fruits and vegetables in which the fiber content is more. You need to avoid constipation at all costs.

Try to develop the habit of living in a relaxed atmosphere. Mental stress is also the main cause of tension, leading to the portals of diabetes.

You know, you need to defeat diabetes. Why then smoke or drink? Both are the trusted agents of the diabetes.

Let food be Thy medicine and the medicine be Thy food...the old saying goes thus!
